Wombourne Volleyball Club are featured in the December edition of Volleyball England's 3Touch magazine. This article underlines the transformation that the club has gone through since the merger with Coseley Volleyball Club and the start of the 2013-14 season.

Ladies 1 player Paula Jennings contributed to the article with Black Country and Staffordshire Volleyball Relationship Manager Rob Payne adding his comments on the development of the club over the last 12 months. The development of the club was attributed to the dedication of the clubs members and committee, with the importance of the club's links with Dudley College highlighted.

Everyone affiliated with the Wombourne Volleyball Club should be hugely proud of what we have achieved!

16/12/2014 - DATES TO REMEMBER!

Training has now finished for the Christmas break and will resume in January. After its success last year, WVC will again be holding its now annual Christmas tournament! All members and casual members are invited to take part. It might be a little close to Christmas but think of it as one last opportunity to burn off some calories before the festive gorging begins! And remember, fancy dress is optional but not wearing it will be frowned upon!

-Tuesday 23rd December - Christmas Tournament
-Tuesday 6th January - Training resumes

The WVC Committee would like to wish all WVC full, casual members and everyone associated with the club a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Merry Christmas!

Over the last few months members of Wombourne Volleyball Club have undertaken coaching and/or refereeing qualifications. All Wombourne members that attended the Grade 4 Refereeing course were successful and have all now received their refereeing ID cards. The club added a further 17 qualified referees to members that are already in possession of a referring qualification.

As part of the Volleyball England grant received earlier in the year Wombourne had committed to upskilling members to improve the level of coaching available at the club. Over the summer 5 members successfully gained their level 1 coaching certificate and alongside two further members of the club recently successfully achieved level 2 certification. The club now has 1 level 1 and 7 level 2 coaches. Congratulations to all!

The evening was a massive success. On the night WVC provided opportunity for 71 people, including regular and casual members, Dudley College students and new players to take part in sessions coached by some of WVC's level 2 qualified coaches.

WVC will be hosting similar events in the future with the aim of introducing new players to the sport along with continuing its work with Dudley College to enhance the skills of local young players. 04/8/2014 - SUMMER TOUR!

This summer, Wombourne VC have attended their usual series of outdoor tournaments. Although this summer has not yielded as much success as in previous years, the usual near misses, close calls and thorough competition leant to a fun yet challenging summer of volleyball.

Sandwell - 5th July

Two teams were entered into the one day tournament at Sandwell Valley Park, with WVC competing in both the men's and mixed divisions. The men's team had some very tough competition and finished the day 5th overall, with members of both the first and second teams taking to the court. The mixed team was made up of members of the current ladies squad, along with recent additions to the club and a couple of men's players recovering from recent injuries. Although success was limited, the competition gave some valuable experience to new members of the club whilst the weather couldn't have been better and an enjoyable day was had by all.

Tamworth - 12-13th July

A number of WVC male and female players, and other friends associated with the club, competed in the annual Camping and Caravanning Club 'Volleyball Meet' held in Tamworth. The tournament is held over two days with the team competing in the top division. On the Saturday, the team finished in the top 4 positions and progressed through to the second day. Beating a team, including members of Rugby Phoenix VC, in the semi-finals, saw the team reach the final for the 3rd consecutive year. The team unfortunately lost in the final. It is the 3rd year running that a team of WVC players and club friends have finished as runners up in this competition. Let's see if we can break this next year!

Bath - 19-20th July

In previous years, the Bath Whitfield tournament has been attended by just enough Wombourne players to field a single team but with the growth of the club over the last 12 months, 3 WVC teams were entered. Counting players and other friends of WVC, 32 people attended the tournament. With the Black Country flag flying over Bath Rugby Club (courtesy of a member of WVC), glorious weather was had on the Friday night. However this was not to last as the campsite was awoken in the early hours of the morning by the sound of thunder, lightning and relentless rain. The start of play was delayed slightly to allow the rain to subside. After a very tough day of volleyball in tricky conditions, all 3 of the WVC teams were through to their respective plate competitions on the Sunday. As luck would have it, as soon as play had finished for the day, the sun appeared and the glorious conditions were resumed.

The weather on the Sunday was far kinder and much more conducive to playing volleyball. All 3 teams faced very tough competition with some encountering unexpected national league competition in their divisions. Several members of the squads had not experienced competitive volleyball for a number of years with some experiencing it for the first time. With this taken into consideration, all teams made a good account of themselves but all left the competition at the end of the group stage. Then came the deconstruction of the camp and the end of a great weekend. Members of WVC stayed around to cheer on friends from Rugby Phoenix WVC who were competing in the division 3 plate final. Thank you to all members, volunteers and friends of the club who have made these weekends possible.

Due to the commitment of many members of the club to the level 2 coaching course this weekend, Wombourne are sadly unable to field a team at the Salisbury Volleyball tournament but will be hopefully returning next year to bring further 'spirit' to the tournament.

30/6/2014 - WVC SUMMER TOUR 2014

Saturday 5th July marks the beginning of Wombourne VC's summer tournament tour! Members of the various Wombourne squads will take part in 4 tournaments over 5 weekends, with tournaments in Sandwell, Tamworth, Bath and Salisbury. Last year we had a semi-final and two final appearances, one of which ended ended with a Wombourne victory. Good luck to all that are taking part across the 4 weekends.

Saturday 5th July - Sandwell Volleyball Tournament
Saturday/Sunday 12th & 13th July - C&C Volleyball Tournament, Tamworth
Saturday/Sunday 19th & 20th July - Bath Volleyball Tournament

16/6/2014 - END OF SEASON AWARDS 2013-14

The annual WVC end of season awards evening was held at the Charlton House in Dudley on 14/6/14. The night saw the usual Player of the Season and Most Improved Player awards, along with the addition of new Trainer & Volunteer of the Season awards and a WVC Team of the Year. As it was the club's 20th anniversary, there was also a special award for the club's founder and honorary president Bill Craig. A good night was had by all, with the celebrations running late into the evening. Not even the England result could dampen the spirits of the Wombourne squad's and friends of the club.

Thanks to all those that attended and made it such a great evening!

Saturday 7th June marked the end of the WMVA season, with the cup and plate finals both held at the Wolverhampton University campus in Walsall. Both Wombourne men's teams made it through to the final of the plate - a remarkable achievement considering two teams from the same club have never competed in either final previously.

The men's 1 team won claiming a 3-0 victory. Although it was not as close as both Wombourne teams would have liked, it was a great end to a momentous season, coming in the club's 20th anniversary year.

Thank you to all that came along and supported on the day. Both teams received excellent support!

Congratulations to the men's 1st team on adding plate success to their earlier promotion from division 2.

Earlier in the season Wombourne Volleyball Club began to apply for a grant as part of the Sport England Small Grants Programme. The scheme enables sports clubs to apply for a grant of up to £10,000.

The club applied for a grant of £9673 to enable adjustments to be made to the current training facilities to allow for a second court, further training equipment to be purchased and the up-skilling of members in regard to refereeing and coaching. The club are pleased to announce that we have received the grant in full! This will allow the club to build on the successful developments of the past 12 months.

All at the club would also like to thank Adam Granger for his hard work in managing the bid.

Unfortunately, there will be no training on Tuesday 13th or Tuesday 27th of May due to both men's teams competing in their respective Plate semi-final matches. The men's 2nd team are playing Birmingham Met at home followed by the visit of Tamworth Spartans 1 two weeks later.

Officials are still required for the match and all are encouraged to come along and support the lads!

All at the club would like to congratulate the Ladies team after an excellent first season together.

The first ever Wombourne Ladies squad began to train at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and ended the season very strongly, finishing 5th in the league. The progress that has been made over the season has been remarkable and we look forward to seeing them challenge for promotion next season.

Well done to all!

Updated - Squad lists, league tables, fixtures, results and affiliations.

For the first time in Wombourne Volleyball Club’s 20 year history, a Ladies’ team took to the court for a competitive volleyball match. The first match of the Ladies Division 2 2013/14 season was away against Tettenhall Tigers. The Ladies’ team worked together well considering it was their first competitive game together as a squad. Tettenhall settled quickly and got into an early lead, although it was not long before Wombourne found their feet. The first ever Wombourne Ladies’ point was won by Rachael Hale and this quickly settled the nerves. The teams exchanged points, keeping the score close but Tettenhall eventually claimed the first set 25-19.

The second set followed a similar pattern and although Wombourne grew in confidence, Tettenhall’s experience again proved too great and they claimed the second set to a similar margin.

In the third set, Wombourne played exceptionally well coming back from 8 points behind. They fought hard right up until match point resulting in a very close 28-30 victory to Tettenhall. The team showed excellent character and commitment considering that this was the first time that they had played together and there are plenty of positives for them to take forward. Well done ladies! Here’s looking forward to your next match…

Celebrating its 20th year, Wombourne Volleyball club is delighted to welcome Coseley Volleyball players in a merger that is creating some exciting opportunities. Not only does it mean new facilities, two teams can now be formed, offering players of varying abilities and interests a chance to improve their skills. One team will be in Division 2 and 1 in Division 3.

Furthermore, the interest for a Ladies team has meant that we can now offer training and league matches for a third team. The ladies team will compete in Division 2. This also provides opportunities for mixed or a ladies team in the Summer tournaments too!

For the 2013-14 season all Wombourne teams will be training and playing their home matches at the state of the art fitness facilities located at the new 'Dudley Evolve' in Dudley Town Centre. Dudley Evolve is a brand new Dudley College facility located in Tower Street, Dudley. The state of the art sports hall has been built to official Sport England specifications and will provide an excellent home for Wombourne Volleyball Club. This development marks the beginning of exciting times for Wombourne Volleyball Club!

Even with the 2012/2013 season ending, Wombourne Volleyball club has had a busy summer merging teams with Coseley, entering four outdoor tournaments and introducing a Ladies team to the club.

Back in June, the first time the merged team played together was in the Sandwell Volleyball Tournament where they reached the Men’s Semi-Finals. This was then followed by the annual Volleyball Meet in Tamworth hosted by the North Warwick District (associated with The Camping and Caravanning Club). Here the team reached the Division 1 final, taking home runners up for the second year in a row.

July saw two teams enter the Whitefield International Volleyball Tournament in Bath. This was the first time a mixed team were entered, unfortunately, missing out on a Semi-final place by one point. The Men’s team, however, achieved success in Division 3 as Plate Winners. No mean feat in the scorching heat on the Sunday!

After the growing interest in the Ladies’ team, it was decided a mixed team would enter the Salisbury Volleyball Tournament for the first time in August. After coming third in their pool on the first day, the team were placed in Division one on the Sunday where they faced some tough competition. After all their (wardrobe) efforts, the team were awarded the Spirit of the Tournament Award. (Please see photos of the topsy turvy team). Members of the Men’s team were also invited to take part in the Cambridge Volleyball tournament the following weekend.

Thank you to all clubs who hosted the summer tournaments and here’s looking forward to the new season!
